Retaining Wall Approvals

Exempt Development

Often, builders do not obtain approval or construct retaining walls as part of their service which means the responsibility is left to the owners.

In some cases, retaining walls can be constructed without an approval, provided they meet the criteria of the Exempt Development requirements.

Required Documentation

Where an approval is required, it may be sought under Complying Development (CDC) or Development Application (DA) and Construction Certificate (CC).

Preliminary Research

The location and height of the retaining wall will determine if an approval is needed, before any works start on site, we recommend you complete your research on whether an approval is required.

Design and plans should be discussed with a landscape architect or licensed builder to help with the design of the retaining wall as you will need to obtain architectural plans or engineering plans to lodge for an approval.

Application Submission

To lodge an application for retaining walls, please download and complete our application form and lodge via the NSW Planning Portal www.planningportal.nsw.gov.au with any supporting plans or documents.

It is imperative that you are aware of your obligations with relation to constructing any retaining walls to avoid any possible delays in obtaining an occupation certificate.
