Often, builders do not obtain approval or construct retaining walls as part of their service which means the responsibility is left to the owners.
In some cases, retaining walls can be constructed without an approval, provided they meet the criteria of the Exempt Development requirements.
Where an approval is required, it may be sought under Complying Development (CDC) or Development Application (DA) and Construction Certificate (CC).
The location and height of the retaining wall will determine if an approval is needed, before any works start on site, we recommend you complete your research on whether an approval is required.
Design and plans should be discussed with a landscape architect or licensed builder to help with the design of the retaining wall as you will need to obtain architectural plans or engineering plans to lodge for an approval.
To lodge an application for retaining walls, please download and complete our application form and lodge via the NSW Planning Portal www.planningportal.nsw.gov.au with any supporting plans or documents.
It is imperative that you are aware of your obligations with relation to constructing any retaining walls to avoid any possible delays in obtaining an occupation certificate.

Building a house and moving in is quite daunting but when you deal with people as lovely and informative as Louie from NHCG it all seems so much easier! Louie came through the property explaining what he was looking for and why, explained what will be expected and how to go about it and all with such a lovely nature! He even told me I’d done a good job with the flecking in our epoxy floor. Thank you so much Louie for your info today, it was really appreciated! And you NHCP for getting a certifier out so quickly and replying so promptly to all my queries.
I had a difficult site to built. I found them very upfront and efficient service Mr Luke Young, Miss Shikha Uprety and all the team members direct you the right way and provide first class service. Yes, they will tell you if anything is not up to Australian standards. My house was looked after in every stage and every detected fault corrected. I support this great Aussie business. If you ask, will I hire them again? Answer is yes.
Had an overall great customer experience with NHCG especially with Amanda and Nadene.
The team was always happy to help and explained all the requirements and processes involved and delivered on expected timeframes as promised.
Very reasonably priced when compared to others.
Would highly recommend New Home Certification Group for anyone that wants peace of mind for their application.
As a builder, we have had experience working with multiple private certifiers, and have found our experience working with Craig Tibbey and NHCG worlds beyond other service providers. In our industry getting prompt, clear and dependable feedback is critical for keeping our projects moving and maintaining the highest quality. When we engage Craig for a new build, we need his input at regular intervals. He is extremely responsive when we need site inspections, quick to turn around responses regarding technical aspects of the job and gives clear, detailed feedback that we can action to ensure the best outcome.
NHCG were efficient and easy to with. Amanda was of great assistance guiding me through the process for getting the CSC for our home demolition. As the homeowner I found this to be an easy exercise (a couple of phone calls and emails) and substantially cheaper (thousands of dollars) than having my builder do it.
